What is cremation?
Cremation, or the incineration of cadavers, is the process in which a corpse is reduced to its basic elements by means of heat and evaporation, thus eliminating the less that edifying process of decomposition.

Are services by a funeral agent necessary in cases of cremation?
They are not necessary.

Is a coffin necessary in cases of cremation?
No. The cadaver should be covered, the type of covering provided is white with a zipper and then the cremation process is carried out. As established by the rules and regulations of the Health Department, a cadaver should be cremated either in the coffin or covering in which it arrived at the crematorium.

Is cremation allowed for Catholics?
Yes. It is allowed since 1983 when the Pope approved it. All Christian churches also allow it.

What happens with the bone fragments, commonly known as ashes, resulting from cremation?
This bone fragments are completely free of germs and bacteria, therefore, they can be kept in the home in an appropriate urn, scattered in the sea or land, or buried in the family grave, where, due to the small size of the urn, the remains of a whole family can be buried without the high costs of a subsequent disinterment.

How much bone fragments, or ashes, result from the cremation process?
From three to nine pounds, approximately.

Is embalming necessary in cremation cases?
It is not necessary. The corpse should be kept refrigerated until the moment of cremation.

Has cremation increased in Puerto Rico since it was established in 1983?
Definitely yes, and there are many reasons for it. The availability and cost of land and the understanding by different religions that cremation is not in conflict with their beliefs has made it possible for the term Christian burial to be substituted for Christian cremation.

Is it possible to establish a prearranged plan for cremation services?
“Yes, we will soon be able to offer financial assistance for cremation services and it will be provided by a banking institution. Not only does this guarantee that your investment will become a transferable asset, but it will also help increase your peace of mind.”
